How to Play Charades

The rules of this simple game can be summed up in just a few bullet points.

Start by dividing into two (or more) equal groups. At this point, it would be wise to appoint someone to keep score and another to keep time for the entire group.

After forming teams, you must choose who will go first.

The victorious group then selects its first official actor. A card will be drawn at random and given to him or her. Once the clock starts ticking, the actor will perform the task written on the card. The actor’s teammates are currently guessing the card’s mystery word. The performer is NOT ALLOWED to aid their team in any way that involves speaking, lip-reading, or pointing.

Tip for the Actor

If you want your team to guess a certain number of words, you should tell them how many. Be sure to label your antics with the appropriate group.

The group must agree on a time limit for each round before the actor begins. Most rounds last between two and three minutes. Each round begins with a countdown clock, and points are awarded to the guessing team if they correctly identify the card’s word before the clock runs out. If they do not, they will receive no points.

Each member of each team gets a chance to act in a scene as the teams take turns.

There are several possible outcomes to this game. After a certain amount of time has elapsed, when a certain number of points has been scored, when all of the cards have been used, and so on. Pick a winning condition ahead of time. At any given time, the victor is the player who has accumulated the most points.

Supplies You’ll Need

The fact that you don’t have to do much to play is one of the many reasons I enjoy this game. You only need a bowl, a timer, a pen, and some notecards or scrap paper. From there, you’re on your own!
